I’m going to share with you in this article, what a Transformational Leader is, why you need them on your team, and what you can do to ensure that you are one.

Why Transformational Leaders Are so Important

The last ten years have seen a huge shift in the nature of leadership. For decades, companies have used traditional management models to run their businesses. This has led to a lot of people being promoted to positions of power, while others fall into place due to their ability to get things done without being asked. While this kind of management may have made a lot of sense at a time when a company had a handful of employees, it is no longer viable in today’s highly competitive world. The only way to succeed in this world is to adapt to change. But this requires a different type of leadership. Transformational leadership provides an effective model for leading people through change and uncertainty.

Transformational leadership is a style of leadership that seeks to transform employees by using principles from the fields of psychology, sociology, and economics. The key difference between a transformational leader and a transactional leader is that the former focuses on building self-awareness, interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, vision, and motivation among others while the latter concentrates on meeting the basic needs of employees and ensuring that they perform at their best.

Transformational leaders inspire, challenge, educate, motivate, and guide their followers through the most critical and complex tasks, by communicating in a way that’s clear, concise, and relevant. Transformational leaders have the courage to speak truth to power—with both conviction and humility. Transformational leaders are intentional, honest, humble, and compassionate.

What Is Transformational Leadership?

Transformational leadership is the kind of leadership that changes your followers to make them better versions of themselves. Leadership is about helping others. Transformational leadership is about helping people become more capable of leading themselves. Transforming your people doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time and consistency.

However, transformational leaders will be consistent in their efforts to help their team members grow. Transformational leadership is the kind of leadership that changes your followers to make them better versions of themselves. Leadership is about helping others. In my years of working with leaders, I’ve noticed that the leaders who are most successful in transforming their teams are those who have mastered three essential skills:

1. Self-awareness

2. Self-motivation

3. Self-regulation

In this post, I want to share with you what I mean when I refer to these three skills and how they apply to transformational leadership.


The first skill necessary for transforming your team is self-awareness. Leaders who are self-aware understand that they need to know themselves and their strengths and weaknesses in order to lead effectively. When leaders don’t take the time to understand themselves, it’s easy for them to make poor decisions. For example, a leader may be very intelligent but be in the habit of making decisions based on the latest fad or opinion.

This kind of decision-making doesn’t work well when you’re trying to transform your followers. The way to get better results is to understand what makes you tick. I was having a conversation with my friend about the importance of self-awareness. He said that the most successful leaders are those who have figured out who they are and what drives them. He said that the best leaders are those who are always learning and growing. Leaders who are always learning and growing are self-aware. In fact, a leader who is not self-aware will eventually stop learning.

And when that happens, they start to stagnate. He described the difference between people who are self-aware and those who aren’t as the difference between a person who knows where he is going and one who doesn’t. Those who know where they are going take steps to get there, while those who don’t know where they are going will just keep taking steps in the wrong direction. So what does this have to do with leadership? If you don’t know where you’re headed, you’re likely to take a lot of unnecessary steps and waste a lot of time. And if you don’t understand your strengths and weaknesses, it’s easy to make poor decisions.


The second skill necessary for transforming your team is self-motivation. Leaders who are self-motivated are driven by their purpose and passion. Leaders, who are self-motivated are constantly asking themselves: “What do I want to accomplish? What are my values? What do I believe in?” Most people who aren’t motivated do what they do out of habit or because they have no choice. They don’t have the desire to do what they don’t want to do. In contrast, leaders who are self-motivated have the desire to do what they don’t want to do because they have a higher purpose and meaning in life. For example, when you ask leaders what motivates them, most will say that they want to help others and make a difference in the world. But when you ask leaders how they get themselves to do these things, most will say that it’s their passion for helping others that keep them going. And that’s true.

Yet, the key to self-motivation is that leaders must have a purpose and passion that is greater than themselves. Leaders who are self-motivated have a higher purpose and passion than themselves. They don’t do what they do for themselves. They do what they do because they care about something greater than themselves.


The third skill necessary for transforming your team is self-regulation. Leaders who are self-regulated have the ability to control their emotions, thoughts, and actions. Leaders who are self-regulated are able to focus on the task at hand, not on the emotions they are feeling. Leaders who are self-regulated are able to take a step back and look at the big picture, not at the immediate situation. They are able to stay focused on the task at hand and not be distracted by the emotions they are feeling. Leaders who are self-regulated are able to do what they need to do and not worry about what others think. Leaders who are self-regulated are able to set aside their emotions and thoughts and focus on what they need to do.

Self-Regulation is a key component of transformational leadership because it provides the foundation for leaders to be able to successfully lead others. It’s one thing to have all the skills necessary for leading, but it is another thing to actually practice them.

Transformational leadership is a relatively new school of thought in business, but one that is starting to become more popular. This type of leadership is all about changing the way people think. If you can get a leader to change the way they operate and the way they communicate, then you can transform an entire organization and the way it operates. Transformational leaders aren’t necessarily the loudest or the best communicators.

What Are the 4 Elements of Transformational Leadership?

Transformational leadership is a term often used in the context of leadership styles within business settings, but it can be applied to any leadership position, from that of an employee to that of a parent or teacher. Although this kind of leadership style can be applied in both formal and informal settings, the leader must be able to convey and motivate through the use of a particular set of communication and behavioral skills. Transformational leadership involves the following four elements: vision, values, empowerment, and change.


This element is defined as a set of goals that the leader has for the company or organization in which she works. She sets these goals in order to help her team members understand the direction they should take in order to reach those goals. She does this by articulating her vision in terms that are understandable to the people on her team and that they can easily relate to.


These are the ideals and standards that a person holds as an important part of her life. This includes the values she holds as a parent, spouse, or friend. The leader’s values define how he or she wants to be perceived by others and also define his or her actions. For example, if the leader is a parent, he may want to set high standards for his children because he knows that he himself will hold himself to those standards.


This element refers to the act of giving power and responsibility to others. Transformational leaders believe that their employees are capable of accomplishing things on their own, but they also believe in delegating tasks to those who are more skilled than they are. They empower their employees by giving them the ability to make decisions and set goals for themselves.


The leader must change as well as his or her team members. He or she must be able to change at a fast pace if necessary to adapt to new circumstances. The leader must be willing to learn from mistakes and other people. This is a very important characteristic for the leader, because a leader is also responsible for the failure of his or her team members.

In conclusion, transformational leadership is about creating an organizational culture where employees are committed to helping each other, share responsibility, and are held accountable for results. It is about creating a climate in which the entire organization can be trusted, and where it feels safe to make mistakes. It’s about leading the organization in the right direction, instead of just telling people what to do. Transformational leaders are not only great managers but great leaders.
